Fans have flocked to Liverpool's Anfield stadium today (Thurs) following the sudden death of player Diogo Jota.

The club has been left "heartbroken" after the 28-year-old player died alongside his brother Andre Silva, 26, in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of this morning."

The Spanish authorities have said that the pair were found dead after a car crash near the city of Zamora, which officers suspect was caused by a tire blowout.

News of the incident has left the football world in a state of mourning, with hundreds of fans coming together to pay their respects at Anfield.

This morning, attendees could be seen sharing their stories of the star while placing flowers and cards down in a memorial.

Chris Lee, 26, a lifelong Liverpool fan who lives near the stadium, went down to pay his respect today after the tragic loss.

The fan brought with him some flowers and a football shirt with the number 20 on it to lay in the player's honour.

He said: "My fiancée told me the news this morning. I was surprised, he was only young. My immediate thought was that I had to go down and pay my respects. "

"He was a good player and a good guy. "

"He was a favourite player of mine. When he played it wasn't all about him, he was a team player. He was just a nice human being. "

"I think it was a big loss for the club. Everyone who turned up today was heartbroken. It was quite busy outside the stadium." "

Emma Ryan, 45, also went down to place some balloons, flowers, and a card for the player with her 18-year-old son Callum.

She said: "I was just watching the telly this morning when I got two notifications on my phone. I just had this feeling that I had to read what those were. "

"My heart just sank when I saw Diogo Jota. I had to run into my son and wake him up to tell him the bad news. "

"My son is a big Liverpool supporter. He was in tears and threw himself to the floor heartbroken. He was just inconsolable. It's like it was a family member that passed away. "

"It is heartbreaking. He was young and he only got married ten days ago. "

"It is a massive loss for the team. He was a big player. It is a sad day at Liverpool. You can see and feel the emotion in everyone at Anfield."

The mum, from the Wirral Peninsula, says she believes the club should retire his number 20 shirt following his death as a sign of respect.

She added: "He didn't leave, he was still number 20. He died as number 20 so that number should be is forever."
