Kagoshima, Japan - July 02, 2025 A new eruption was recorded at Mount Shinmoedake on July 2nd, as shared by X user @517doa in a video captured at 12:02. "Mount Shinmoedake has erupted again," the user posted. Volcanologists in Japan are closely monitoring the volcano in the country's southwest. They say a magma eruption cannot be ruled out. Mount Shinmoedake, located in the Kirishima range on the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki, erupted on June 22 for the first time since 2018. Since then, activity has continued. On Wednesday, an ash plume rose 2,800 meters above the crater rim. Government volcanology experts met the same day. They reported massive volcanic gas emissions and crustal movements indicating underground swelling. However, analysis of volcanic ash showed no new magma had erupted. The committee did not consider the situation serious enough to require an emergency meeting. Committee head Shimizu Hiroshi, who also leads the Center for Volcanic Research Promotion at NIED, said the eruption is not currently magmatic, but the possibility cannot be dismissed. He urged careful monitoring to track underground swelling. The alert level remains at 3 on Japan's 5-point scale. The Meteorological Agency warns of falling rocks and pyroclastic flows within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano.
