However, a new wildfire erupted early Friday in the Agriles area near Hania, on the southern part of the island, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation. The initial blaze in Lasithi caused damage to homes and vehicles, while the more recent fire near Hania has raised concerns over further risks to residential and agricultural areas. Authorities and hotel association officials reported that more than 5,000 tourists, hotel staff, and local residents were evacuated from the Ierapetra area along Crete’s southern coast as a precaution. The fires have inflicted significant damage on businesses, farmlands, and houses in the Ierapetra province, according to officials and witnesses. Firefighters, supported by aerial units, continue to work to fully extinguish the flames and prevent further spread. No casualties have been reported so far, but assessments of the full extent of the damage are ongoing.
