Barnsley, United Kingdom - July 03, 2025 A six-month closure has been confirmed for the Wilthorpe footpath level crossing after multiple life-threatening incidents triggered urgent safety measures. In just eight weeks, Network Rail recorded 15 shocking cases of dangerous activity at the site. People were seen lying on the live rail, placing items on the tracks, blocking gates, and using the crossing as a backdrop for photographs. The alarming behaviour led to an emergency closure in May. Now, Barnsley Council has approved a formal six-month closure under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to protect public safety. Andy Cunningham, route level crossing manager for Network Rail, said, “The footage we released in May showed exactly why urgent action was needed at Wilthorpe footpath crossing. The shocking misuse and disregard for safety is the worst I’ve ever seen, with people risking their own and others’ lives.” He added, “We knew that this was a popular walking route, so did not take the decision lightly, but since the initial closure we have received messages from residents supporting our decision, recognising that this was entirely the right thing to do for the safety of the community.” Cunningham said he had visited the location with local councillors to review surrounding footpaths and discuss permanent options to prevent further incidents and avert potential tragedy.
