The march took place through the shattered streets of the town, where participants chanted slogans in honor of Hussein and the martyrs of Karbala. Accompanied by religious elegies, mourners expressed their sorrow while marching through neighborhoods scarred by months of bombardment. Located near Lebanon’s southern border, Kfar Kila has been among the areas most affected by Israeli artillery and airstrikes. Since the escalation of hostilities in November 2023, multiple districts in the town have sustained severe damage, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate. The 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, also known as Ashura, marks the anniversary of the passing of Mohammad’s grandson Hussein in the desert plains of Karbala, some 113 kilometers (70 miles) from the modern-day capital Baghdad. Al-Hussein, along with 72 loyal companions, was killed in the infamous Battle of Karbala in year 61 of the Islamic calendar by the forces of Umayyad Caliph Yazid I on the 10th day of Muharram.
