Residents of Gaza City have reported feeling increasingly unsafe as Israeli airstrikes have intensified across the area, despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. Medical sources reported on Saturday that 300 Palestinians were wounded and 70 killed in attacks since early morning. Horrific scenes unfolded at a damaged school-turned shelter in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood, where eyewitness Hassan Al-Samri searched through debris for his belongings. Another survivor, Akram Salmi, expressed the pervasive sense of dread: "There is no safety at all. Even if I move closely toward the stairs or stand here for just 10 minutes, I don’t feel safe. Every day, I say, 'Our end is near. We will die one by one. It’s only a matter of time.' This is how we think now." In late May, a deadly Israeli airstrike on the school-turned shelter killed six family members. This incident represents just one in a series of attacks on Gaza City shelters over the period. On Thursday, an abrupt Israeli air strike killed at least 15 displaced Palestinians, mainly women and children, and wounded several others in a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City. The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, launched in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of more than 57,330 Palestinians. The recently proposed 60-day truce, supported by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, aims to halt the fighting and lay the groundwork for a lasting ceasefire.
