HERSHEY, Pa. — On July 4, 2025, first responders from multiple agencies rescued nine individuals trapped in the dam swell of Swatara Creek after their tubing group became caught in swift, hazardous water.

Units from the Hershey Volunteer Fire Department, Middletown Volunteer Fire Department, and several mutual-aid partners—including Union Deposit Fire Company, Hummelstown, Lower Swatara, Swatara Township, River Rescue of Harrisburg, and Harrisburg International Airport—responded to the emergency near the dam head.

The tubers were safely removed and reunited on shore, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the water rescue teams. Drone footage captured the entire rescue operation, showcasing the professionalism and urgency with which responders worked.

This incident marked the second water rescue call of the day. Authorities emphasized that recent weather has created treacherous conditions in local waterways, with swift currents and dangerous debris posing significant risks to recreational users.

Officials urge caution throughout the holiday weekend and remind the public that fast-moving water can quickly become life-threatening.
