At around 5 p.m. on July 4 in Shangqiu, Henan Province, a black sedan was driving when the cement road ahead suddenly exploded from the heat and buckled upward, creating a raised concrete obstacle about 60 centimetres high that blocked the road. The driver braked urgently and fortunately avoided a collision, only small stone fragments hit the windshield.

Earlier that day, at 9:10am, the Shangqiu Meteorological Observatory issued a red high-temperature warning, forecasting that daytime temperatures in the city and surrounding towns would exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104°F).

In extreme heat, road surface temperatures can reach up to 70 degrees Celsius (158°F), causing concrete to expand and pressurise. If expansion joints are not properly installed or filled during construction, it can lead to explosive ruptures.
