China: Chinese research team launches clinical trial for invasive brain-computer interface
Storyline: Chinese research team launches clinical trial for invasive brain-computer interface [Voice_over] Scientists at the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology in China have conducted their first successful clinical trial of an invasive brain-computer interface technology that it says is smaller and more flexible than the current product under trial. Researchers said a flat censor about the size of a coin was implanted into the skull of a quadriplegic patient. Attached to it are flexible anodes that are inserted into brain tissue. A few weeks after the March procedure, the patient was able to play video games and chess using only his mind. [Sound_bite] Zhao Zhengtuo, Researcher, Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology (CEBSIT): "The electrode is so soft that the force required to bend it is comparable to the interaction force between two neurons in the brain. This allows the electrode to coexist harmoniously with brain tissue over extended periods without triggering immune responses or rejection reactions." [Voice_over] There are three main BCI technologies: non-invasive, semi-invasive, and invasive. China's invasive BCI technology represents a major milestone in the global race to master the tech, with Chinese scientists becoming the second group, after Elon Musk's Neuralink Corp, to have entered the clinical trial phase for invasive BCI products.
