ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE - JULY 5: A group of Ukrainians held a protest in Istanbul on Friday (July 5), demanding an end to Russia’s offensive in Ukraine and the release of prisoners. The demonstrators carried Ukrainian flags and banners with photos of war prisoners, and recited the Ukrainian national anthem. The protest was attended by relatives of prisoners and Ukrainian soldiers who were released through a prisoner exchange agreement. Svitlana Lyashko, representative of the Ukrainian Prisoners’ Families Association, said they are all waiting for their loved ones, who are still prisoners, and will continue to fight for their freedom. Lyashko emphasized that Türkiye is an influential and respected country in ongoing diplomatic talks and expressed appreciation for its contributions to the prisoner exchange negotiations. Denys Andrianov, one of the Ukrainian soldiers freed in the prisoner exchange, described being captured and wounded about a year ago, saying he had shrapnel in his arm and leg and went through very difficult days. Andrianov emphasized that they hope for Türkiye’s help in the release of prisoners. Russia and Ukraine reached an agreement in Istanbul on June 2 set out terms for additional exchanges of detainees and the repatriation of thousands of fallen soldiers from both sides. The initial round of discussions conducted directly between Moscow and Kyiv took place earlier in May, marking the first such diplomatic engagement after nearly three years of conflict.
