Paraglider crashes into lake during accident simulation
A paraglider spun uncontrollably and crashed into a lake while performing an accident simulation.
Footage shows the pilot descending steadily before the canopy collapsed mid-flight during a training exercise in North Sumatra, Indonesia.
He was receiving instructions from colleagues through a radio when the wing suddenly folded, sending him spiralling down.
At just 40ft (12m) above the surface, he lost stability and plummeted faster, spinning before crashing into the water below.
Paraglider New Riana Barus said: 'That was one of the accident simulation activities for Paragliding pilots held in Tongging, Lake Toba.
‘The name of that activity is SIV or Simulation d'incident en volt training to anticipate the occurrence of flight failures on paragliding parachutes, which can happen to anyone.'
When the trainee floated in the water, a team in a raft rushed to take him onboard.
He was unhurt and taken back to land after the training session.
SIV is a paragliding training program where pilots deliberately simulate in-flight emergencies like canopy collapses or stalls in a controlled environment usually over water.
