Buy video

The Cape Romano Dome House was built in 1981 by retired oil producer Bob Lee. Its purpose was to be an eco-friendly, self-sufficient and weather withstanding vacation home for his family. It became a historic landmark, popular staple and tourist destination due to its unique architecture. It no longer stands due to major Hurricane destruction. Hurricanes have drastically changed the islet’s sandy landscape it once stood on. Hurricane Andrew in 1992, was the first major hurricane that prompted the evacuation of the family’s home as the windows blew out and the home became uninhabitable. Years later, Hurricane Irma collapsed the first two domes to be submerged in 2017. Hurricane Ian finished taking down the remaining domes in 2022 causing the entire structure to be fully submerged to present day. Many locals and tourists enjoyed visiting the dome house and have sentimental memories attached to this landmark.
