A huge fire at a rubber factory left two people injured on the outskirts of Bangkok.

The inferno broke out at the facility in Samut Sakhon at around 10:30 am on Monday, July 7.

Footage shows the fire tearing through the 1.6-acre factory, with dark smoke columns swelling from the collapsed roof of the building. Fireballs erupted as the flames ignited an oil pipe used in the manufacturing process.

Firefighters and more than 20 fire trucks responded to the scene. They spent around two hours bringing the blaze under control as it ate through large amount of fuel and rubber products.

Police Lieutenant Imsuthinan Phongsasut of the Samut Sakhon Provincial Police Station said: 'The fire started at the oil pipeline used in the factory's production process. There was flammable fuel and a large number of finished rubber products inside, which caused the fire to spread rapidly.

'Two people suffered minor injuries: a factory worker and a firefighter. They were promptly taken to the hospital.'

Factory employees said they were aware that the fire originated from the oil pipeline but were unsure what sparked it.

Authorities said the area has been cordoned off as engineers and forensic officers investigated the exact cause of the fire.

A civil engineer will also assess whether the building can still be used.

The fire came just two days after a furniture factory burned down in the same province.

Fires in Thailand are commonly caused by aging electrical infrastructure, extensive use of wood in construction, and regional heatwaves that can exacerbate fire risks. Rapid fire response can also be hampered in densely packed neighbourhoods where narrow streets can delay firefighting efforts.
