The lake is famous for its unique color, which comes from the salt-loving microalga Dunaliella salina. The microorganism produces red pigments to protect itself from high salinity, giving the water its distinct pink appearance. Lac Retba supports a thriving salt production industry, with about 3,000 people relying on it for their livelihoods. Roughly 60,000 tons of salt are extracted annually, mostly during the dry season from November to June. The lake is also on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage sites, underscoring its ecological and cultural importance.
