Motorists stranded as flood surges through roads in Indonesia
Motorists were stranded as floods surged through roads in Indonesia.
Footage shows a heavily inundated highway and a motorcyclist with his vehicle partially submerged in Bogor Regency, West Java, on Monday, July 7.
M Adam Hamdani, Head of Emergency and Logistics at the Bogor Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), confirmed that the flooding affected three sub-districts, including Jonggol, Klapanunggal, and Cileungsi.
Adam said: 'Heavy rain with high intensity and long duration caused the Cibarengkok and Cikarang Rivers to overflow, triggering the floods.'
In Jonggol, the flood surged through Permata Jonggol Hospital, prompting the evacuation of patients and staff.
Adam added: 'Patients on the first floor, totalling 16 people, were moved to the second floor.'
The water began to recede around 2 am. No casualties were reported.
The floods submerged 1,530 homes in Klapanunggal, affecting more than 4,650 residents, while in Cileungsi, around 50 houses were inundated.
Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
