France: Flames Closing In On Marseille As Wildfire Shuts Down Airport
Marseille, France - July 08, 2025 A fast-moving wildfire erupted near Marseille on Tuesday, prompting the closure of the Marseille Provence airport as thick smoke loomed over the city. A video posted by X user ball captured flames approaching neighborhoods in Marseille, while a massive smoke cloud hovered above. According to local fire officials, 168 firefighters were deployed to contain the blaze, which has already scorched approximately 74 acres near Les Pennes-Mirabeau, just north of the city. Authorities used both fire engines and helicopters in their efforts to halt the fire's spread. “At this stage, populations must remain confined to residential areas,” the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur prefecture warned on X. “Close shutters and doors, keep your property clear for emergency services, and do not travel on the roads,” the post added. High winds caused evacuations in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, BFM TV reported, with residents and trees visibly impacted by the gusts during live broadcasts. A spokesperson for the airport confirmed that all takeoffs and landings were halted since midday. Flights were redirected to regional airports including Nice and Nimes. The disruption comes at the start of the French summer vacation season. No timeline has been given for the reopening of the airport. One resident reported that the fire's smoke was noticeable even in the city center of Marseille. “The fire is spreading,” the Marseille municipality stated on X. “Avoid all outdoor activities and do not block emergency access routes. Follow instructions and alert messages.” Meanwhile, another wildfire that began Monday near Narbonne, in southwestern France, remains active. Fueled by winds reaching 60 kilometers per hour, it has already destroyed 2,000 hectares, according to the local prefecture.
