MILFORD, Conn. — A dramatic early-morning rescue unfolded in downtown Milford after police officers witnessed a vehicle drive off New Haven Avenue and into the pond behind Stonebridge Restaurant.

Around 1 a.m., officers on patrol saw the vehicle enter the water and immediately dove in without hesitation. They successfully pulled the driver from the vehicle moments before it became fully submerged.

The Milford Fire Department evaluated the driver for injuries, and he was later taken into custody. Authorities determined the man had struck another vehicle on Shipyard Lane before fleeing and crashing into the pond. He has been charged with DUI and evading responsibility.

The Milford Police Department praised the involved officers for their bravery, quick response, and professionalism.
