China: Fitness craze lifts business at sports venues across China
Storyline Fitness craze lifts business at sports venues across China [Voice_over] China's "slimming economy", which includes all things related to getting and staying in shape, is busting at the seams, fueled by both policy support and growing public health awareness. Official data from June shows that online searches for gym pass membership were up over 30 percent, with searches for 24-hour gyms nearly doubling to about 97 percent. That round the clock option is popular when it comes to classes, too, with many sports venues offering 24-hour access to teacher-led yoga, Pilates, and dance workouts. [Sound_bite] Xiao Jun, Gym Manager: "About 70 percent of members focus on weight loss. Daily foot traffic hits around 200 people, a 20 percent increase, with more signing up every day." [Voice_over] Squash, the indoor padel sport, is also a smashing success this summer with online searches for squash courts surging by more than 188 percent. The manager of this Beijing squash club says all four courts are fully booked on the weekends. [Sound_bite] Guo Yanyu, Squash Venue Manager: "Venue rental costs around 20-30 U.S.dollar per hour. Weekend slots are always fully booked." [Voice_over] According to data from commercial query platform Tianyancha, there are currently close to 1.6 million fitness-related enterprises now operating in China.
