ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State Troopers responding to a disturbance near Madison Avenue on July 4 quickly transitioned to rescue mode as reports of a shooting and fire came over the radio just before 10 p.m.

Troopers were assisting with security at the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show when they were dispatched to the 300 block of Madison Ave. Upon arrival, they encountered a fire at 333 Madison Ave. and immediately entered the burning building.

Troopers evacuated residents from a basement apartment, cleared the upper floors to ensure no one remained inside, and then entered an adjoining brownstone to rescue an elderly woman. Working alongside Albany Police, they also helped retrieve a dog from another apartment.

In addition to rescue efforts, Troopers assisted with emergency medical care for the shooting victims. Their actions — captured on body-worn cameras — were praised for bravery and coordination during a chaotic and dangerous scene.
