As Chinese Premier Li Qiang begins his official visit to Egypt on Wednesday, Egyptian government officials are keenly anticipating greater cooperation and stronger ties between China and the Middle East country both within BRICS and other multilateral frameworks, as both countries pursue modernization in a complex international environment. Premier Li landed in Cairo on Wednesday for a two-day official visit at the invitation of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Kamal Madbouly. He is scheduled to have in-depth exchanges of views with Egyptian leaders on developing bilateral relations, deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, and other issues of common concern. Prior to his arrival, Li attended this year's 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Saturday to Tuesday. At this year's summit, leaders from China and Egypt, along with those from other full member states of BRICS and partner countries of the cooperation mechanism, emphasized strengthening multilateralism, reforming global governance, and empowering the Global South through deeper cooperation, expanded membership, and opposition to unilateralism and protectionism. Ambassador Salah Halima, who served as former Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister, said China is a major player in the BRICS organization who has continued to build strategic and mutually beneficial partnership with each of the other members, including Egypt. Halima sees BRICS as an inclusive international platform that will continue to expand and play an increasing role in strengthening the voice of Global South countries on the global stage. He also said that the aspiring countries will benefit from their respective bilateral cooperation with China and other BRICS countries. Diaa Helmy, a member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, highlighted the importance of the Chinese premier's visit, saying that it will help enhance the bilateral economic partnership and hopefully, lead to a road map for the two sides to jointly meet global challenges.
