Los Angeles, United States - July 10, 2025 07/09/2025 07:58 pm GMT-0700 WILMINGTON, LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is currently managing a technical rescue near the intersection of Lomita Boulevard and Figueroa Street. According to LAFD, 31 individuals, all believed to be tunnel workers, have been safely removed from the tunnel without visible injuries, and no one is missing. The incident involved the collapse of an 18-foot diameter tunnel, which was under construction for a municipal wastewater management project. This occurred at an underground excavation site approximately five to six miles from the sole entry and rescue access portal. While the exact number of workers trapped is still being verified, preliminary reports indicate that those trapped managed to navigate over a 12 to 15-foot pile of loose soil with some effort. They were able to reach several coworkers located on the other side of the collapse. Subsequently, the workers were transported back to the entrance in small groups using a tunnel vehicle, traveling the more than five-mile distance to safety.
