This is the inspiring moment a grandmother joined youngsters as she achieved her dream of graduating from college.

Lucy Gonzaga, 71, earned a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries from the State University of Northern Negros in Sagay, the Philippines.

Footage captured by Quiresa Mae Cadornigara-Monano shows the pensioner wearing a yellow academic sash and dancing with fellow graduates during their rehearsal on June 17.

They can be seen swinging their hands in the air while swaying to the beat of the music at the Escalante City Coliseum.

Quiresa said: 'She is an inspiration, and an example of perseverance and lifelong learning.'

Despite studying late in life, the elderly woman never gave up on her goal of completing her education.

She persevered through financial hardship, personal loss, and the challenges of returning to the classroom as a senior citizen.

Lucy said: 'I was not able to finish high school after I graduated from elementary school in 1964 because of poverty, but in 2011, at the age of 57, I came back to study and finished high school in 2019.

'My husband died six years ago, and I used the pension of my spouse, amounting to 2,500 PHP (32.56 GBP), to pay for my tuition fees in college.'

She added that she plans to work at the city hall to continue serving her community and to show that age is no barrier to contributing meaningfully to society.
