Storyline: China achieves historic progress over past 5 years [Voice_over] Over the past five years, China added over 35 trillion yuan, or 4.9-trillion US dollars, to its economy – equalling the combined GDP of the country's top three provinces. Crucially, says the Chinese government, this growth came while facing challenges posed by the pandemic and global trade wars, with annual contributions to global growth averaging 30 oercent over the past five years. [Sound_bite] Zheng Shanjie, Head, National Development and Reform Commission: "Overall, there's been new ground-breaking progress, breakthrough changes, and historic achievements in economic and social development. China has become the most stable, reliable, and proactive force driving development in today's world." [Voice_over] Innovation is what's driving that transformation: R and D spending surged nearly 50 percent since 2020. Investment in research is nearing OECD levels. Breakthroughs include the Fujian aircraft carrier, homegrown C919 jets, and the world's first fourth-generation nuclear plant. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
