Shelf cloud looms over Texas homes following deadly floods
A shelf cloud loomed over Texas homes following deadly floods that struck the region.
Footage captured by Anderson Jones shows the wedge-shaped cloud formation moving towards Arlington on July 9, around 8 pm.
Last week, the San Gabriel River burst its banks as severe storms hit central Texas.
The swollen river flooded nearby communities, partially submerging homes and prompting evacuations as flash flood warnings were issued across Williamson County.
Authorities confirmed that more than 100 people were killed in the massive flooding that struck the region, including 28 campers who went missing at Camp Mystic in Kerr County.
Shelf clouds are large, horizontal cloud formations that develop along the leading edge of a storm. They occur when cold, dense air from the storm pushes outwards and undercuts warm air, forcing it to rise and condense into a wide arc of cloud.
They differ from wall clouds, which are smaller, more compact, and form when the base of a supercell or rotating storm lowers closer to the ground.
