LAVRIO, GREECE - JULY 10, 2025: A group of migrants rescued near the Greek islands of Crete and Gavdos arrived at the port of Lavrio on Thursday, July 10. The rescue followed a series of recent sea crossings from North Africa, as Greece continues to face heightened migrant flows in the southern Aegean. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday announced stricter measures to address the increasing arrivals from Libya. Addressing parliament, Mitsotakis said the situation requires extraordinary measures and revealed plans to notify the European Commission about a temporary suspension of asylum reviews for three months for migrants arriving by boat from North Africa. The premier also announced that the government plans to establish a new closed reception facility on the southern island of Crete to help manage the migrants arriving to Crete with the option of creating a second center when necessary. Since early summer, Crete experienced significant surge of migrant arrivals. In response, in late June, Athens announced deployment of warships off the coast of Libya. Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis also visited Benghazi to discuss the matter, among others, with Khalifa Haftar, commander of the eastern Libyan forces.
