Police raid herbal shop for 'selling overpriced baldness cure to tourist'
Police raided a herbal shop allegedly selling overpriced baldness cures to tourists in Pattaya.
Officers stormed the Thai Natural Herbal store in 'Sin City' following a complaint from Indian customer Ajaykumar Tulsiram Mahajan on Monday, July 7.
The holidaymaker said he was walking along Soi Baywalk Hotel when he was approached by the men selling herbal panaceas which they claimed would make his thinning hair shinier and thicker.
The desperate tourist allegedly agreed to buy three bottles of herbal extract and four soap bars worth a whopping 50,000 Baht (1,130 GBP). However, he later lodged a complaint with police after realising he had been scammed.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested two Pakistani men and four Thai women accused of selling unregistered herbal products at exorbitant prices.
They also seized bottles of hair growth treatments containing coconut oil, butterfly pea powder, and other herbal extracts.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Torlarp Tinamat, senior inspector of the Tourist Police Division 2, said: 'All six suspects were charged with manufacturing and selling herbal products without a license and manufacturing and selling unregistered herbal products.
‘The foreign suspects were also charged with being foreigners working without a permit.
‘They were handed over to the inquiry officer of Pattaya City Police Station for further legal action.'
On March 19, a British tourist was fleeced by a similar gang selling pricey weight loss herbs, also in Pattaya.
Malcolm Campbell, 63, from Staffordshire, said he was walking through a market when he was greeted by two Arabic men. The pair reportedly told him he 'looked fat' before allegedly pushing him to buy two bottles of the fat-burning concoction for 41,000 Baht (930 GBP).
Malcolm later realised his mistake after he called his Thai girlfriend to tell her about the purchase.
The woman, familiar with the tourist-scamming gangs in the area, said the mixture of honey and herbs was overpriced. She then dragged the shocked Brit to the police station to file a report.
