US, Los Angeles: Van Nuys Officer Needs Help Triggers Huge LAPD Response After Car Plows Into Building With Sound On Tape Part 3
Los Angeles, United States - July 10, 2025 07/10/2025 01:45 am GMT-0700 VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Los Angeles Police Department officers issued an “officer needs help” call after witnessing a car slam into the side of a Western Bagel store, with the vehicle breaching the wall and ending up halfway inside the building in the 7800 block of Sepuleveda Boulevard. Over 50 LAPD officers responded to the urgent call, unsure at first whether the crash was intentional or posed any threat to the officers. The Los Angeles Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue team arrived to assess the structural integrity of the building. Officer Jeff Smith with the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division provided additional details of the incident later at the scene to Key News Network. Smith stated that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Sepulveda Boulevard, approaching Stagg Street, and was being followed by a tow truck driver who observed the vehicle weaving all over the roadway. The tow truck driver attempted to stop the vehicle by honking his horn, but was unsuccessful. As the vehicle reached Stagg Street in front of the Western Bagel store, the driver abruptly turned his car, where two LAPD officers from the Mission Division were stopping for a cup of coffee. Both officers were nearly run down, and one had to dive out of the way. According to Smith, the officer was struck but uninjured. The vehicle continued into the building, striking and breaking a water main and a gas line, which may or may not be broken, according to Smith. The gas company responded to the scene to assess the line. Smith said four occupants inside the vehicle were detained and taken into custody. The driver will be arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and two of the back passengers — female juveniles — were transported to Mission Station and will probably be released to their parents. The other passenger was released already. The LAPD's Valley Traffic Division will handle the traffic collision investigation, and the LAPD's Mission Division will handle the arrest of the suspect for assault with a deadly weapon.
