A large wildfire broke out in the Trambuccone area between Olbia and Sassari on the western island of Sardinia. The surrounding airspace near Olbia Airport was temporarily closed, causing delays and cancellations. Several flights scheduled to arrive in Olbia were diverted to airports in Cagliari, Alghero and Rome. Firefighting aircraft and helicopters were deployed to contain the blaze, while ground teams and volunteers continued extinguishing efforts. In Tuscany’s Castiglione della Pescaia, a fire that started at a salt treatment facility quickly spread to nearby forested areas due to strong winds. Firefighters responded both from the ground and the air. As a precaution, Grosseto’s governor ordered the evacuation of 600 local and foreign tourists from a camping area. Italy’s national fire service said on X that four helicopters participated in extinguishing the fire and confirmed it was brought under control by evening. In Otranto, southeastern Italy, another fire that began late Tuesday destroyed approximately 150 hectares of scrubland. Authorities suspect arson may have caused the fire. In a separate incident near Metaponto di Bernalda in the southern Matera province, recent wildfires are also believed to have been deliberately ignited. The Matera Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation. According to official fire service statements, firefighters have been battling dozens of blazes across regions such as Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany, Lazio, Puglia, and Campania in recent days, using both aerial and ground-based resources.
