Woman to wear same white dress to four weddings - with a hack to keep brides happy
A woman who has been invited to six weddings the summer is keeping costs down by wearing a $25 white dress she bought off Poshmark - with an important change each time.
Calissa Holder, 26, dyed the dress pink for the first do - her cousin's wedding on May 17 - so as not to upset anyone who might be angry at her choosing a white garment.
And she's going to progressively dye it darker a further three more times, using $6 fabric dye, so she has a "different" dress to wear to each event, for a fraction of the price."
Calissa, who works in marketing, from Greensboro, North Carolina, US, said some people praised her for being sustainable, while others called her cheap.
"I was searching for a good dress to wear in a wedding in May, and I couldn't find one in a colour I liked and style I liked," she said."
"I took to Poshmark, and obviously you can't wear white to someone's wedding. "
"I could reasonably and feasibly wear the dress for four of the six weddings. "
"I did it for sustainability and cost savings". "
Calissa documented the process online, sharing with viewers the process of dropping the dress into a pot of boiling water and adding the dye before letting it soak.
Despite successfully changing the colour of her white dress to a light pink, she faced some backlash from commentors.
"I dyed it light pink and posted a video and people in the TikTok comments said the dress was too light and it was going to look white," she said."
"The funniest part of the whole story is my cousin's fiancé came across my TikTok video on her For You page. "
"She didn't follow me or know I had a TikTok. "
"She said, ‘Is this for my wedding?' "
"She said that's clearly pink, you're fine. "
"So I got the bride's stamp of approval for the first wedding". "
Despite the clash of opinions from other viewers asking Calissa, "Why are you so poor just buy a new dress", or, "This is such a great idea for sustainability, it looks so cute", she will continue to dye the dress over the year for different events. "
"I'm going to dye it a coral orange next and progress to a deeper orange for a wedding in September," she said."
"Maybe I'll move to a rusty brown for a wedding in November"."
