Indonesia fishing boat catches fire leaving one crew member missing
A fishing boat was engulfed in flames, leaving one crew member missing in Indonesia.
The KM Kramat Jati was sailing off Karimunjawa Island when a fire erupted from its kitchen on Thursday.
The blaze rapidly engulfed the vessel as the crew jumped overboard to escape.
Footage shows flames ripping through the vessel, sending a thick smoke plume over the sea.
The crewmen clung onto life preservers as they swam toward a merchant vessel. Fifteen of them were rescued.
Carab Purwanto, head of Rancawuluh Village where most of the fishermen lived, said: 'According to the ship information, the KM Kramat Jati was carrying 19 crew members. Nine of our residents were on board, and one person is still missing.
'The fire happened while they were on their way to Kluwut Brebes Fisheries Port. It started in the kitchen, likely from a stove that was being used for cooking, before it quickly spread to other areas.
'The report stated that one of the crew members went missing because he jumped into the sea without safety equipment.'
The survivors were rescued by a passing merchant vessel, then transferred to the KM Mina Ade Putra ship to be taken to the Kluwut Brebes port.
Officials said the search was ongoing for the missing crew member.
