NEW YORK, US - JULY 10, 2025: Footage captured on Thursday, July 10, shows a subway surfer on the roof of a train car in Queens, New York City, United States. Subway surfing remains a troubling trend among youth, despite its deadly consequences. Despite a joint campaign by the MTA, NYC Public Schools, and pro BMX athlete partners—announced in June by New York Governor Kathy Hochul—to combat subway surfing, the viral trend on social media continues to encourage young people to engage in this dangerous activity. Subway surfing is the dangerous and illegal act of riding on the outside of a moving subway train—typically on the roof, between cars, or even clinging to the back. Primarily undertaken by teenagers as a thrill-seeking stunt, the activity is often filmed and shared online. Despite its visibility on social media, subway surfing has resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis.
