...BERLIN, GERMANY - JULY 12, 2025: German police clashed with demonstrators during a pro-Palestinian rally in Berlin on Saturday, July 12, detaining several participants amid heightened tensions over Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Hundreds of protesters gathered at Neptune Square to denounce Israel's “genocide” in Gaza and to express solidarity with Palestinians. Waving Palestinian flags, demonstrators chanted slogans such as “This is not war, it's genocide,” “Boycott Israel,” “Stop arming Israel,” “Children in Gaza want to live,” and “Israel is killing children.” Police, who deployed in large numbers citing security concerns, intervened forcefully to disperse the crowd and detained numerous activists. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 57,900 Palestinians so far, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages and the spread of diseases. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
