China: China's smart, AI toys stack up global presence
Storyline: China's smart, AI toys stack up global presence [Voice_over] Next-generation smart toys made in China are building a strong following in overseas markets with their combination of traditional play and cutting-edge technology. This Rubik's cube, for instance, combines an embedded chip, sensors, and a gyroscope, allowing for real-time rotation tracking and even global multiplayer races against other cubers. Its manufacturer sells more than 60 million cubes to 158 countries and regions worldwide annually and says this one is their latest top seller. [Sound_bite] Chen Yonghuang, general manager, toy manufacturer: "AI-powered toys like this are generating strong interest in Western markets, where consumers find them novel and highly appealing. We're expanding into Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. Products like this are priced between 28 and 70 U.S. dollars." [Voice_over] The company is based in southern China's Chenghai District, where around half of China's and one-third of the world's plastic toys originate, earning it the nickname the "toy capital". This year, many other companies in the region have also witnessed strong overseas sales for smart, AI-powered toys. [Sound_bite] Qiu Zhihong, general manager, toy manufacturer: "This year, we're seeing stronger demand for premium smart toys - particularly interactive, AI-enabled products like robots and robotic dogs, for which we’re seeing a 10 to 20 percent growth in sales. This one was launched last year and has proved highly popular with a constant stream of repeat orders.” [Voice_over] Official data shows that Chenghai District exported some 1.4 billion U.S. dollars-worth of toys in 2024, up more than 12 percent year on year.
