KHALID ABU SHAKRA, PRESIDENT OF THE MARAH ABU MUALLA VILLAGE COUNCIL SPEAKING TO REPORTERBETHLEHEM, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - JULY 14, 2025: The Israeli army, claiming it was unlicensed, demolished a three-story building, where a few Palestinian families lived, in the occupied West Bank. Khalid Abu Shakra, President of the Marah Abu Mualla Village Council, spoke to Anadolu about Israel's demolitions in the region. Abu Shakra reported that the Israeli army raided the town of Marah Abu Mualla in Bethlehem in the southern West Bank and said that Israeli army, with the claims that it was "unlicensed construction, then began demolishing a three-story building where a few families lived. Abu Shakra also reported that Israeli forces issued demolition warrants against 20 other houses in the town, claiming they were unlicensed. Baha Sharif, the son of the demolished building's owner, said, "The occupation forces turned the 3-storey building into rubble within an hour, claiming that it was built without a license." Sharif stated that Israeli authorities notified them of the demolition decision several years ago and that they subsequently brought the case before Israeli courts. "The Israeli court was scheduled to convene today regarding the demolition decision. However, we woke up today to Israeli forces evicting us from our house and demolishing everything inside the house", he said. Israel widely uses the pretext of a lack of construction permits to demolish Palestinian homes, especially in Area C in the occupied West Bank, which constitutes around 60% of its space. Under the 1995 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, was divided into three portions – Area A, B, and C. Area C is under Israel’s administrative and security control until a final status agreement is reached with the Palestinians. Since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, at least 993 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in the West Bank by Israeli forces and illegal settlers, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
