Residents shocked as huge elephant wanders onto their driveway
Residents were shocked when a huge elephant wandered onto their driveway looking for food.
CCTV footage shows the tusker squeezing between a front porch and a parked truck in Chanthaburi, eastern Thailand.
The wild animal sniffed around and found a durian, which it cracked open and ate as a small dog ran away.
The jumbo then carefully reversed out of the tight space without hitting anything before disappearing into the dark early morning on July 15.
Resident Tarawut Sanong said: ‘The elephant came at around 4 am. It was too big to turn around, so it walked backwards.'
Only the half-eaten fruit was left behind and nothing else was damaged.
Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.
The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
