NEOSHO, Mo. — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has named Sgt. Nick Booe as Deputy of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2025, citing his quick action that likely saved a driver’s life and prevented a potential accident.

On May 15, around 8:58 a.m., Booe noticed a vehicle moving unusually slow near 32nd Street and Connecticut Avenue. The sergeant saw the driver slumped over the steering wheel and immediately acted, notifying dispatch, turning around, and attempting to stop the vehicle. When the car continued to roll, Booe exited his cruiser, opened the car door, and placed the vehicle in park.

Finding the driver unconscious, Booe began CPR after removing him from the car. Emergency responders from the Joplin Police Department, Joplin Fire Department, Newton County Ambulance, and METS Ambulance soon arrived to assist. The driver regained consciousness and was able to speak by the time he was transported.

The driver later contacted the sheriff’s office to thank Booe and confirmed he had suffered a heart attack.
