China supports the extension of the mandate of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) and its role in stabilizing the situation in Haiti, said a Chinese envoy to the UN during a Security Council meeting on Monday. The Security Council on Monday adopted Resolution 2785, which extends the mandate of the BINUH for six and a half months, until Jan 31, 2026. It expresses the council's intention to consider the UN secretary-general's February 2025 recommendations on options for the possible role of the United Nations in Haiti, notably regarding the establishment of a UN support office to provide logistical and operational support to the multinational police force in Haiti. In his speech after the vote, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, stressed that the political crisis is one of the critical crises in Haiti at present, and supporting the political process in Haiti is the core mandate of the BINUH as a political mission. The Chinese side calls on all political parties in Haiti to strengthen unity and take responsibility, Geng said, adding that China supports BINUH and hopes it will intensify efforts to advance the political process by coordinating more closely with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and other regional organizations. The BINUH was established by the UN Security Council in 2019 in accordance with its resolution 2476. It aims to assist the Haitian government in strengthening political stability and promoting good governance, creating a peaceful and stable domestic environment, and protecting human rights.
