Swiss mountaineer rescued from volcano where Brazilian tourist died
A Swiss mountaineer was today rescued from the same volcano in Indonesia where a Brazilian tourist died.
Benedikt Emmenegger, 46, was descending a treacherous slope on Mount Rinjani when he slipped and fell from the trail at around 11:25 am on July 16.
He survived the fall but was left unable to move due to an injury.
Just like Juliana Marins, 26, from Rio de Janeiro, the Swiss man was unable to climb back to safety.
However, mountain rescue teams arrived this time and provided first aid to Benedikt before he was airlifted to hospital.
Yarman, head of the Mount Rinjani National Park in Lombok, said the Swiss man had been accompanied by his daughter and a local porter.
He said: 'We, along with the medical team, have already moved to provide assistance.'
Footage shows the hiker lying on mats as he was wrapped in a thermal blanket of gold aluminium, with his daughter kneeling next to him. Rescue crews later arrived and carried him on a stretcher to a rescue post, where they were waiting for a helicopter.
Yarman added: 'The helicopter has been prepared and has flown to the evacuation point. Hopefully, the weather cooperates.'
Officials have not clarified the extent of Benedikt's injuries. They said he had set out on Tuesday to see the volcano's famous Segara Anak sulfur lake. The route he used was reportedly notorious for being dangerous, especially during rainy or humid weather.
Mount Rinjani is an active volcano located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia, standing at 3,700 metres (12,200 feet) and is the second highest volcano in the country.
Its stunning crater lake, Segara Anak, is a popular destination for hikers and adventure seekers, including Brazilian tourist Juliana who died after falling from a hiking trail on June 21.
The 26-year-old pole dancer and publicist was said to have plunged some 600 metres (around 2,000ft) into a ravine after asking to rest during a group hike. She was initially spotted alive via drone, but rescue teams were unable to immediately reach her due to dense fog, steep terrain, and poor weather.
Her body was found four days later on June 24. Her family has condemned the allegedly bungled rescue efforts as 'serious negligence' by Indonesian authorities.
