1. VARIOUS OF CONTROVERSIAL STREET IN TEHRAN RENAMED AFTER HASSAN NASRALLAH TEHRAN, IRAN - JULY 16: The Tehran City Council has officially renamed a street that for decades symbolized diplomatic tensions between Iran and Egypt.

On June 15, the council approved changing the name of "Khalid al-Islambuli Street" to "Hassan Nasrallah Street." The new street sign was unveiled in a ceremony attended by municipal officials.

The street had been named after Khalid al-Islambuli, the Egyptian army officer who assassinated Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in October 1981.

Islambuli, celebrated as a “martyr of resistance” in Iran, became a central figure of discord that led to a break in diplomatic relations between Tehran and Cairo in the 1980s.

In recent months, efforts to revive diplomatic ties between Iran and Egypt prompted the Tehran City Council to reconsider the street’s name.

After months of discussions and reviewing various alternatives, the council decided on June 15 to rename it after Hassan Nasrallah.

Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was killed in September 2024 during Israeli airstrikes on Beirut.
