COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Injured firefighter Dave Tysdal was flown to a rehabilitation hospital Tuesday morning to begin his recovery from gunshot wounds sustained during a June 29 ambush on Canfield Mountain.

Tysdal was shot in the back during the attack that claimed the lives of Coeur d’Alene Fire Battalion Chief John Morrison and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood. Despite his injuries, Tysdal managed to warn other first responders to stay clear of the area, likely saving additional lives.

Tysdal, who suffered a collapsed lung, shattered ribs, and spinal swelling, has been unable to move his legs since the shooting. However, he recently regained slight movement in his left toes. He received a hero’s sendoff from Kootenai Health Medical Center, with hospital staff and fellow first responders lining the hallways in support as he was transferred to a spinal cord injury rehab facility.
