VARIOUS OF SPEECH BEING DELIVERED AT PROTEST / PROTESTERS WAVING EU AND AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATIONS FLAGSBRUSSELS, BELGIUM - JULY 16, 2025: Farmers from various European Union (EU) countries staged a protest in Brussels on Wednesday, July 16 voicing opposition to potential cuts in agricultural subsidies. Around 200 farmers, mobilized by different farmers’ unions across the EU, gathered at Luxembourg Square in front of the European Parliament (EP) building. Protesters then marched through main roads towards the European Commission headquarters. Carrying banners that read “Don’t turn off agriculture” and waving the flags of EU and agricultural associations, the demonstrators chanted slogans denouncing EU agricultural policies. The demonstration took place as EU officials met to discuss the draft of the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). Farmers fear that the proposed budget changes could reduce support for agriculture by merging key funding programs. Currently, about one-third of the EU budget goes to agricultural subsidies. Final decisions require approval from both the European Parliament and all member states. Reporting by Dursun Aydemir // Writing by Mustafa Tuncer
