Filipino student Joanna was stunned to discover minimalist water closets in her university's restroom in Shanghai.
Footage shows the international learner opening one of the doors, revealing an open water channel running through the middle of the cubicle and extending to other partitions.
These traditional trench-style toilets are common in older public facilities, especially in rural areas or older campuses, because they are inexpensive to install, easy to clean with flowing water, and reduce clogging compared to Western toilets.
