A dog needed emergency treatment after it swallowed an ARROW whole - mistaking it for a Dentastix pet treat.

Rylo the Rottweiler and Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix was playing in the garden with visiting children who were using a toy bow and arrow set.

Dog owner Rebecca Jones, 40, thought nothing of giving him a Dentastix to reward his good behaviour and calm him down after playing with the kids.

But soon after he was sick and after becoming more unwell Rebecca took Rylo to the vets, where an x-ray revealed a 12in plastic arrow inside his stomach.

Vets sedated him and pulled it out through his mouth and thankfully he is recovering well.

Community carer Rebecca, from Cardiff, Wales, had to pay £995 in vet bills after the mishap.

She said she thinks he mistook the arrows for the long, thin dental treats because they were both near him in the garden.

"They x-rayed him and rang me to say that I was not going to believe what the problem was," Rebecca said. "

"The vets couldn't believe what had happened. "

"I was in total shock when it happened. I couldn't believe how he behaved with a 12-inch arrow in him."

After gobbling up the arrow on June 23, Rylo started to behave differently.

"The kids were playing with Rylo, who was sitting at the top of the garden, which is what he usually does, and I thought nothing of it," said Rebecca."

"He wasn't chasing the kids, and he was sick everywhere. He was drooling a lot, and from that day onwards, his demeanour changed, before I took him to the vets."

Rylo attended Valley Vets, in Cardiff on June 25.

Rebecca says he is back to his "mischievous" self."
