Iraq: 61 Killed in a Hypermarket Fire in Iraq's Al-Kut
Kut, Iraq - July 17, 2025 A devastating fire swept through a newly opened hypermarket in the city of Al-Kut, eastern Iraq, killing at least 61 people, according to the Ministry of Interior. Many of the victims reportedly died from suffocation in restrooms, with 14 bodies so severely burned they could not be identified. Authorities also report 11 people remain missing. The hypermarket had opened less than a week before the tragedy. In response, three days of mourning have been declared in the region as rescue teams continue to search the charred remains of the building.
