POLICE OFFICER NEAR MOTORBIKES (AUDIO OF AIR RAID SIREN)TAIPEI, TAIWAN - JULY 17, 2025: Taiwan conducted a major air raid drill in its capital, Taipei, and neighboring New Taipei on Thursday, July 17, as part of the island's largest-ever Han Kuang military exercise, aimed at preparing the population against potential Chinese missile attacks. At 1:30 p.m. local time, sirens echoed throughout both cities, signaling the start of the civil defense drill. Traffic came to a standstill as all vehicles were required to stop, and civilians were directed into designated shelters, including underground car parks and subway stations. The drill temporarily brought everyday life to a halt, underscoring growing concerns over security tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Authorities said the exercise is part of broader efforts to enhance public readiness in the event of a large-scale attack. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, whereas Taipei insists on its independence. In response to the drills, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that Beijing’s stance “on opposing military ties between the US and Taiwan region is consistent and very firm.” Earlier, China also said the Taiwanese drill is nothing but a “self-deceiving trick" played by the island.
