Tourists trampled on by cows suffer fractured ribs in China, officials say animals were hit with trekking poles
On July 16, in the Wutai Mountain scenic area of Xinzhou, Shanxi, several tourists were attacked and trampled by a group of cows.
The next day, staff from the Wutai Mountain Management Committee responded, saying that some tourists had fed the cows beef jerky, and one cow even stepped on and broke a trekking pole.
Additionally, some tourists were reportedly hitting the cows repeatedly on their hindquarters with trekking poles, which provoked the animals into retaliating.
The injured tourists were found to have suffered mainly soft tissue contusions and minor rib fractures, with no life-threatening injuries. The committee emphasised that the cows, which live year-round on the mountain, are generally not aggressive unless provoked. In this case, the tourists had clearly provoked them they claimed.
The management stated that the incident stemmed from the tourists' lack of proper conduct. Multiple warning signs are posted throughout the scenic area, prohibiting feeding, hitting, or riding the animals.
The case has been handed over to public security authorities. The tourists may face fines ranging from 500 to 2,000 yuan and will be recorded for uncivilised tourist behaviour.
