This is the shocking moment a monkey thief stole a parcel and fled into a forest in northeast Thailand.

Footage shows the macaque holding the unopened package while climbing a branch in Mukdahan, on September 22.

It ascended further toward the forest canopy as the parcel owner begged for it to return the box. However, the man walked away empty-handed after the primate refused to return his belongings.

Thailand is grappling with an overpopulation of macaques invading urban areas, stealing food, damaging property, and occasionally attacking people.

The issue has been worsened by tourists feeding them and shrinking natural habitats, prompting authorities to conduct sterilisation campaigns and relocation efforts.
