Soldiers recover body of missing teacher from volcano in El Salvador
Soldiers have recovered the body of a missing teacher from a volcano in El Salvador.
Professor Enrique Pena Aguilar had been missing since April after getting separated from a group during a tourist hike on the San Vicente volcano, also known as Chinchontepec.
Authorities said he was part of a large group of holidaymakers but went missing early on during their Holy Week trek.
Despite extensive search efforts by friends and emergency services, his body was not located until three months later. Officials confirmed the discovery on Wednesday, July 16.
The Public Ministry said: 'After an exhaustive investigation and search and rescue operation, it is reported that the remains of Professor Enrique Peña Aguilar, 59, who disappeared on April 16, 2025, in the upper reaches of the Chinchontepec volcano, San Vicente, have been located.'
Footage shows members of the Salvadoran Armed Forces retrieving the mountaineer's body, using ropes to navigate the rugged terrain. Firefighters and police assisted them.
The Attorney General's Office of the Republic of El Salvador said: 'Forensic studies will determine the cause of death.'
Enrique was a teacher at a school in Zacatecoluca. Tragically, his mother passed away just hours after learning he had been reported missing.
Chinchontepec, also called the San Vicente volcano, is a stratovolcano in central El Salvador. Its challenging trails and twin peaks make it a notable yet potentially hazardous destination for hikers.
