This is the impressive moment a pet dog solved a basic math equation with its owner.

Mariella Gelle Aguilar, 25, demonstrated how Riyu, her talented Shih Tzu, answers simple addition problems in Cavite, the Philippines.

Footage shows Mariella holding a notebook with a math exercise written on the paper, reading: '1 plus 1 equals'.

She then pointed at the equation and asked her five-year-old pooch for the answer, to which Riyu responded with two barks, counted as the sum's answer.

The pet owner continued to show the dog different math questions, even asking what '2 times 2 equals' was, to which the pooch easily responded.

Mariella said: 'Actually, Riyu had just recovered from an illness. My sister accidentally fed him grapes, which are toxic to dogs, so he got sick. While he was still weak, my sister kept talking to him all the time. I was worried about what she was saying because she was scared Riyu might not make it—and she felt responsible.

'What my sister did was ask Riyu a simple question like '1 plus 1,' then she would bark herself. Riyu just stared at her because he was still weak and lying down. After he got better, we tried again since Riyu loves treats.'
