BLUFFTON, S.C. — A dolphin stranded in a tidal lagoon was rescued over the weekend by the Bluffton Township Fire District in partnership with the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network.

Nicknamed “Lucky,” the bottlenose dolphin became stuck inside the Hampton Lake community. Firefighters from the department’s Heavy Rescue crew worked alongside marine mammal responders to lift the 500-pound animal to safety. The responders wore full gear and used ladders and coordinated teamwork to ensure the dolphin was transported safely and returned to the May River.

The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network is federally authorized to respond to marine mammals in South Carolina through the National Marine Fisheries Service. It is illegal to handle marine mammals without proper authorization.
